About the CDL Tanker Endorsement Test
The Tanker endorsement (N) is required if you want to haul liquid or gaseous materials in bulk — typically tanks of 1,000 gallons or more. This includes fuel tankers, milk haulers, water trucks, and chemical carriers.
The test focuses on the unique dangers of liquid cargo:
- Liquid surge and how it affects braking and acceleration
- How baffles reduce surge and their limitations
- Braking earlier and more gently with liquid loads
- Turning and stopping with a high center of gravity
- Why tankers are at higher rollover risk
- Loading, unloading, and checking the tank
Liquid surge is the most important concept on this test. When a partially filled tanker brakes, the liquid surges forward and can actually push the truck forward — this is why tanker drivers must brake earlier and more gently. Baffles slow the surge but don't stop it entirely.
Our practice test covers every topic the real DMV exam will test, with the same question style and difficulty. Review each explanation and practice until you consistently score 90% or higher.
Tanker Test Tips
- • Brake earlier and more gently than with solid loads.
- • Know that baffles slow surge but never stop it completely.
- • Take curves slower — the high center of gravity raises rollover risk.
- • Avoid sudden moves with the steering wheel.
