About the CDL Hazmat Endorsement Test
The Hazmat endorsement (H) is required to transport hazardous materials in quantities that require placarding. It is one of the most valuable CDL endorsements because hazmat drivers earn higher pay.
The test covers the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) hazmat rules:
- When placards are required and which placard to use
- Hazmat classes and the 9 hazard classes
- Package labels, shipping papers, and marking requirements
- Loading, unloading, and securement of hazmat cargo
- Rules for driving, parking, and route restrictions
- Emergency procedures and reporting incidents
- Vehicle inspections specific to hazmat transport
Beyond the written exam, getting the Hazmat endorsement requires a TSA security threat assessment, fingerprinting, and a background check. The endorsement must be renewed every 5 years, with the TSA check repeated each time.
Our practice test includes the key facts and scenarios from the hazmat section of the CDL manual, so you'll be prepared for both the written exam and the real-world knowledge you need to haul hazmat safely.
Hazmat Test Tips
- • Know the placard table and the three "safe haven" rules.
- • Carry shipping papers in the right place and keep them within reach.
- • Never smoke near a vehicle transporting hazardous materials.
- • Start the TSA background check early — it can take weeks.
