About the CDL School Bus Endorsement Test

The School Bus endorsement (S) is required to operate a school bus that carries students. It is issued in addition to your CDL and, in most states, also requires the Passenger endorsement (P).

The S endorsement written test covers the knowledge needed to safely transport students:

  • The eight danger zones around a school bus
  • Loading and unloading procedures, including the hand signal
  • The eight-light warning system and the stop arm
  • Crossing procedures at railroad and highway crossings
  • Student behavior management and emergency evacuations
  • Special pre-trip inspections and equipment requirements
  • State laws governing school bus operation

The danger zones are the areas around the bus where a student is most at risk: directly in front and behind, and the shaded sides near the front and rear that the driver cannot see through the mirrors. Many S endorsement questions focus on clearing these zones before the student steps forward.

The eight-light system uses a combination of amber flashing lights (to warn that the bus is slowing to stop) and red flashing lights (while students are loading or unloading). The stop arm extends when red lights are on to signal traffic to stop.

Our practice tests mirror the real DMV exam format for the School Bus endorsement, with detailed explanations for every question. Practice until you score 90% or higher, and you'll walk into the DMV ready to pass.

School Bus Safety Tips

  • • Memorize the eight danger zones and mirror coverage.
  • • Know the order of the eight-light system: amber first, red while loading.
  • • Always check that approaching traffic has stopped before letting students cross.
  • • Know where to stop before railroad crossings and when the stop arm applies.
