CDL Class A, B, and C — Which License Do You Need?

Your CDL class determines what you’re allowed to drive. Choosing the right one depends on the vehicles and careers you’re aiming for. All classes require passing the same general knowledge written test — the differences come later.

Class A

A Class A CDL allows you to drive the heaviest combinations — typically a truck towing a trailer, often with a combined weight over 26,000 pounds.

This is the most flexible and in-demand license, opening the door to long-haul and over-the-road careers, flatbed, reefer, tanker, and more. Most drivers chasing the highest pay start here.

Class B

A Class B CDL covers single vehicles weighing over 26,000 pounds without towing trailers over 10,000 pounds — such as straight trucks, buses, dump trucks, and delivery trucks.

Class B is a great choice for local delivery, bus, construction, or municipal work. It often means you’re home more, with less over-the-road travel.

Class C

A Class C CDL handles vehicles transporting 16 or more passengers (including the driver), or certain hazardous materials requiring placarding — even if the vehicle is smaller.

Class C typically covers passenger vans, small buses, and hazardous-material vehicles. It usually combines with passenger or hazmat endorsements.

How to Choose

Ask yourself two questions:

  1. What vehicles will I drive? Match the class to the truck or bus.
  2. What career do I want? Class A maximizes options and earning potential; Class B and C can mean more home time and lower entry costs.

You can also upgrade later — many drivers start with a Class B or C and move up to Class A as their career grows.
